Abstract

This study aims to explore academic learning behavior of undergraduate students in Yogyakarta. Participants in this study were 509 undergraduate students in Yogyakarta, employed using purposive sampling. Design of this study was qualitative content analysis, which combined the use of open-ended questionnaire and interview. The result suggested five core elements of learning behavior: learning strategies, break activities, learning contents, learning preparation, and social element of learning. Among the elements of learning behavior in these findings, break activities were likely to be an interesting distinctive finding in the context of this study because they have different orientations with other elements. Such a finding can be used as a reference to improve the concept of learning that incorporates information technology in a way that it is not viewed as a distraction, but as an essential part of the break activities in the learning process.

Abstract

This qualitative study is particularly focused on the North Sumatera context; it investigates the dynamics of ethnic and national identities of Bataknese youths in the defining themselves as an Indonesian. Thirty-one individuals (six local figures and 25 Bataknese youths) participated in the study. The results illustrated the strengthening process of ethnic identity through exploring family and environmental common practices. The strengthening of ethnic identity was also found to occur in concurrent with the strengthening of national identity, as manifested in the participants’ willingness to maintain harmony in their society. The study concludes that the strengthening of ethnic identity positively shapes one’s national identity. Student participants and local figures expressed concern about the sustainability of cultural cultivation which is necessary to shape ethnic identity among young Bataknese. The study recommends a Batak kinship model known as dalihan na tolu, in which many families with different tasks and roles, flexibly manage differences to strengthen national identity based on the philosophy of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.

Abstract

Self-estimated intelligence is an underresearched topic in Indonesia. In fact, self-estimated intelligence is an important thing as it describes an individual's metacognitive processes and it has a crucial role in academic and workplace. The purpose of this study was to determine the self-estimated intelligence in terms of gender and big five personality traits. The study was conducted through a quantitative survey to 265 college students (Mage = 19.40; SD = .98). The instrument used was the Self-Estimated Intelligence Scale and the IPIP-BFM-25 to measure the big five personality. The results showed that men had higher self-estimated intelligence than women. Multiple regression analysis showed that the three predictors of personality facets (agreeableness, conscientiousness, and intellect) positively predict self-estimated intelligence. Conscientiousness is the strongest predictor of self-estimated intelligence, followed by agreeableness and intellect.

Abstract

The study aimed to examine gender and age measurement invariance of the Indonesian version of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS-ID). Participants were 1,922 individuals aged 16-26 years (M = 20.835, SD = 2.284). The measurement invariance of the Indonesian version of the SWLS was tested using multi-group analysis. The research showed there was gender and age measurement invariance of the SWLS-ID based on metric and scalar invariance. Also, the SWLS-ID did not have measurement bias due to group differences. Thus, the SWLS-ID can be used to compare life satisfaction scores between gender and age groups in the Indonesian sample.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Academic discourses around interpersonal relationship in the patriarchal culture tends to assume men in the superior position, hence their unique experience is considered less significant to be investigated. As a result, what we know about men’s experience and expectation in a romantic relationship is only as far as what their gender stereotype subscribes; that relationship is only for sex, status and power exercise, and social symbol. In the present editorial note, I emphasize the urgency to utilize an alternative approach in exploring unique experience of Indonesian men in romance; such insight would be valuable to improve the quality of interpersonal relationship through culturally-informed perspective.
